From barn

to modern home

Based on the architect's sketch, the Roth project planning department planned and calculated the radiant heating.

Before installing the Quick-Energy Tacker system, the floor had to be well prepared. Various substrates such as concrete, old screed and wooden floors were first cleaned. The Buchenau installation company Schäfer filled cracks and levelled out unevenness with a floor filler so that a level, even substrate was created on which the Quick-Energy Tacker system was installed.

Before laying the system panels, the installer stuck edge insulation strips to all surrounding walls, columns and edges. He also attached the foil of the edge insulation strip everywhere in a watertight manner with adhesive strips, so that the Quick-Energy flowing screed cannot get into the insulation or onto the wall. This is the only way to absorb the expansion of the screed without creating sound bridges. The watertight bond between the system panels is ensured by the self-adhesive overlap on both sides.

Based on the project planning, the specialist company laid 17 heating circuits at specified laying distances with the X-PERT S5+ system pipe 14 millimetres. Before screed installation, the screed layer marked the measuring points and installed the expansion joints in the door areas.

The Quick-Energy screed delivery came with a truck mixer. The flowability of the screed mixture was tested on the basis of the spreading on a glass plate and sample containers for test prisms were filled. The hardened test prisms are used to measure the flexural strength of the screed.

After filling, the screed layer worked the still liquid screed with a buffing bar for even distribution and to eliminate air pockets. 48 hours later, the screed was ready to be walked on and after four days of rest, the functional heating could begin. The floor work could be continued 14 days later.

The right planning

An exact inventory is the basis for the design of an optimal radiant heating and cooling system - especially in modernisation. The condition and statics of the house, the floors and subfloors, the insulation and the heat generator must be taken into account. Then it is decided whether floors, walls and ceilings or combinations of these are to be used. Depending on this, wet or dry construction systems come into question. In the case of the old barn in Dautphetal, Roth Tacker Systems were the ideal choice for the floor.

The Quick-Energy Tacker system combines the fastest energy supply with the greatest comfort in terms of cosiness and footfall sound. The thin-layer radiant heating and cooling system with QE high-efficiency screed based on calcium sulphate in wet construction manages with a pipe cover of only two centimetres. The minimal construction ensures a quick response.

60 millimetre installation height

Only the optimum combination of Roth product components creates a high-performance system solution. Together with the Roth EPS DES 25-2 Ex System composite panel, the Roth X-PERT S5+ 14 millimetre System Pipe, the Roth 14 millimetre Tacker Clip and the new QE high-efficiency screed, the result is a radiant heating and cooling system with an installation height of only 60 millimetres.

With its wide range of possible applications, the Roth Quick-Energy Tacker System is ideal for residential construction and property solutions in renovation as well as new construction. It can be used as a superstructure on concrete ceilings and wooden beam ceilings. The DIN CERTCO-certified system (DIN CERTCO No. 7F-397-F) is approved for live loads of up to two kilonewtons per square metre and concentrated loads of up to one kilonewton per square metre.

The Roth Ex composite EPS DES 25-2 system board, a combined thermal/impact sound insulation, reduces the construction height of the floor by up to ten millimetres compared to standard insulation boards with impact sound insulation. Due to the thermal conductivity group (WLG 032), the optimised insulation material enables reduced insulation thicknesses combined with impact sound reduction. This means that 25 millimetres of board height is already sufficient to insulate ceilings between living spaces in accordance with regulations.

The energy concept of the new barn

The combination of the pellet system with the Roth solar system - consisting of four Heliostar 252 flat-plate collectors for heat generation - and the Roth Quadroline TQK 500 thermal tank is an extremely energy-efficient solution. The plastic heat tank is used in the modernised barn as a drinking water combination storage tank for the preparation of drinking water and heating support.

Top energy efficiency: up to 65 percent

less heat loss

The Roth Thermotank Quadroline has up to 65 percent less heat loss than standard storage tanks. This is the result of recent comparative tests under defined conditions: Three variants of the Roth Thermotank Quadroline and a standard storage tank were heated up to

60 °C at the beginning of the test. The measurement of the cooling behaviour over the following seven days in standstill at a constant room temperature of about 23 °C showed top energy efficiency for all storage tanks of the Roth Thermotank range compared to the standard steel storage tank.

If the temperature of the storage tank falls below the setpoint, the connected heat generator heats it up again. If we consider this energy expenditure of the heat generator alone during the standstill of the storage tank without withdrawals, the standard version of the Thermotank Quadroline with plastic shell and high-quality EPS insulation shows over 50 percent less heat loss compared to a steel storage tank. Equipped with the optional Thermocoat plus, the Thermotank Quadroline even shows over 65 percent less heat loss compared to a steel storage tank. The Thermocoat is a cover that completely encloses the Roth Thermotank. It is available in 5 mm thickness and as Thermocoat plus with 20 mm thick polystyrene insulation.

Due to their design, Roth Thermotanks Quadroline can be used in individual system concepts. They can be used as a central unit in heating applications, as a separating or buffer storage tank, as a solar and combination storage tank and in domestic hot water heating. Roth Quadroline thermal tanks can be integrated directly into heating systems with a permanent maximum system operating pressure of up to three bar. The high pressure stability is achieved by a unique plastic reinforcement matrix. They are available in 325, 500 and 850 litre sizes. The storage system can be extended far beyond 1000 litres at any time by means of battery switching.

The tank of the Roth Thermotank Quadroline is made of high-quality plastic composite material with diffusion protection, which is why it is extremely light. It weighs only a third of a conventional steel storage tank and thus simplifies transport and installation. Like the plastic heating oil tanks, the tank can pass through any cellar door. Another advantage of the specially certified plastic material is that it is rustproof.

Conclusion

The house has now been occupied and the homeowners are very satisfied with the energy concept. All systems have been successfully commissioned - the next winter can come. The installation company shared: "It was important to the builders to have a modern home with efficient building technology while retaining the charm of the half-timbered barn. We managed this very well thanks to Roth system solutions."
